For those of you just beginning to tune in to your inner Heidi Klum, here are some tips to get your juices flowing:
1. Lots of Layers
Sweaters. Scarves. Jewelry. Jackets. Belts. Layering keeps your outfit interesting. It allows you to play with colors and styles.
The best part of layering is that you don’t have to constantly buy new clothes. Mix and match your three sweaters, five scarves, and ten pairs of earrings. Chances are, no one notices if you recycle your clothing! Now you don’t have to break the bank.
2. Pinterest
Ah, Pinterest. One of the Internet’s greatest gifts to girls.
By visiting the fashion page on Pinterest, you can find exactly what you are looking for—and find more than you ever imagined.
Browse styling tips, Coco Chanel quotes, and celebrity fashion photos. Your brain will overflow with pinspiration!
3. Splurge on Staples
Who doesn’t love a good trip to the thrift store? Sales and coupons are essentials for any aspiring fashionista.
However, there is also a time to spend.
Staples are clothes or accessories you know you will wear frequently. You get a lot of mileage out of a good black dress, pair of heels, white tank, and pair of jeans. Well-made clothes cost more now but save money in the long run. You won’t have to buy those garments over and over again.
Remember, staples are always handy when layering!
4. Wear Everything with Confidence
“Does this look like I’m trying too hard?”
Every woman has asked her best friend this question in the dressing room.
Bottom line: If you like it, if it gets you excited, wear it. Don’t be afraid. Your friend may think that mustard yellow pencil skirt is too “out there,” but you love it.
Trusting your instincts and being yourself are how you find your own sense of style. Doing those things lead you to eventually look at a dress on the rack and think, “That’s so me!” Trends change, and you can change with them. But you don’t have to sacrifice your own style to do so!
People can sense insecurity. If you wear clothing with confidence, you will radiate poise and beauty.
Hopefully these tips help you have as much fun playing dress-up as you did when you were a child. Having fun is what fashion is all about!
